Great American Backyard Campout on Saturday, June 22 at Overlook Park or Bandelier
OVERLOOK PARK – Los Alamos County Recreation Division will join thousands of families across the nation, gathering in their backyards, neighborhoods, communities, and parks to enjoy a night of camping for the Ninth Annual Great American Backyard Campout, organized by the National Wildlife Federation. Join Smokey Bear, Sparky the Fire Dog, and Bert the Squirrel for camping games, songs, prizes and star gazing at Overlook Park. Cosponsored by PEEC, Los Alamos Fire Dept, US Forest Service, and the National Park Service. Free.
BANDELIER – Join the staff at Bandelier National Monument for food and fun activities 6-9 p.m. at Juniper Campground. Visitors are encouraged to camp in Juniper Campground or arrive just to participate in the event. Activities include: 6-7 p.m. Hot dogs, chips and beverages will be grilled by monument staff and offered free of charge. 7-8 p.m. – After dinner, join a park ranger for a sunset stroll on the Tyuonyi Overlook Trail. This is an easy flat two mile roundtrip walk. 8:30-9 p.m. Join a park ranger for a trip back in time to discover some of the hardships and highlights of visiting the monument years ago.

Tours led by County staff will depart from the main lobby in small groups, approximately every 15 minutes, with the last tour beginning at 10:15 a.m. The tour is expected to take approximately 30 to 45 minutes. At 11 a.m., the public is invited to attend the official grand opening and building dedication ceremony hosted by the County Council.
