Slim Randles is a veteran newspaperman and outdoorsman, and was a registered outfitter and guide until someone made the mountains steeper. Both his novels and non-fiction books are based on rural living, and he has also been an award-winning columnist for the largest daily newspapers in Alaska and New Mexico.

Two NYC jazz musicians will perform on piano and trumpet at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 2 at Fuller Lodge. Roy Dunlap (piano) and Marcus Parsley (trumpet) are world-class musicians and Saturday’s concert will be a real treat for jazz lovers. Local jazz musicians will open the show. There’s a story behind every piece of artwork; something magical in the process of its creation. Have you ever been back stage at the theater? This exhibit is a back stage pass into the world of the artist. With a variety of media and a variety of background stories you’ll get a glimpse into the creative process. Exhibit ends March 9, 2013.

Actor/Poet David Mills performs as Langston Hughes 7 p.m. March 4 at UNM-LA Building 2 Lecture Hall
The Jim Sagel Memorial Lecture Series at UNM-LA is pleased to bring actor/writer David Mills to Los Alamos to perform an excerpt from his show “Dreamweaver: The Works of Langston Hughes,” a dramatic rendition of Harlem Renaissance writer Hughes’ poems and short stories (which he will perform in full at the Lensic in Santa Fe on 2/27). Mills will also read his own work and participate in a Q&A. This event is free and open to the public.
Annual Los Alamos Photography Show Opening Reception 5:30 p.m., March 4 at Mesa Public Library
The Los Alamos Photography Club (LAPC) will be hosting its annual photography show for 2013 at the Mesa Public Library from Monday, March 4 through Friday March 29.

Black Mesa Brass Quintet – Brown Bag Performance Noon Wednesday, March 6 at Fuller Lodge
The Black Mesa Brass Quintet will perform. The Black Mesa Brass Quintet was formed in 1990 and still has three of the original five members. Their repertoire is an eclectic mix of classical, modern, pop and jazz tunes. They play a variety of venues including concerts, educational performances at schools, weddings and other special occasions. Jan McDonald, John Hargreaves, Jerry Morzinski, Larry Bronisz and Bruce Letellier make up the quintet.
Vegetable ABCs 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at PEEC
With spring just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about vegetable gardening. Carlos Valdez to talk about “Vegetable ABCs.” This talk is free and open to the public. PEEC is located at 3540 Orange Street behind the High School.
All District Choir Concert on Thursday, March 14 at Smith Auditorium. The concert will begin at 7:00. It is going to be a very exciting concert where we join with all the other elementary choirs in the district to perform two songs and then we will hear the junior high and high school choirs and we finish with everyone singing together for the final song! Performance includes The Crocodile by Ruth Morris Gray and Lewis Carroll, The Beautiful Rain by Janet Gardner and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Eja Eja (We Will Sing For Joy) by Mary Lynn Lightfoot.
