The annual Shop on the Corner Christmas Sale will offer red and “green” holiday bargains on Wednesday, Dec. 5.
The thrift shop sale, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will include brand new and gently used items which the volunteers set aside all year.
Holiday decorations, festive and new clothing, toys and games, books and music, linens, china and glassware, jewelry, leather goods, and gifts are some of the items, which will attract scores of bargain hunters, collectors, and hobbyists.
Shop on the Corner thrift store is located on the lower level of Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, off Canyon Road in Los Alamos.
Shop on the Corner has been in operation for more than four decades and is staffed completely by volunteers.
The Shop’s mission is to help Los Alamos County residents recycle their usable clothing and household items; to provide an inexpensive market for the Northern New Mexico community to purchase these items on a budget; and to use the proceeds from the thrift store to donate to local and regional charities and other worthy causes.
The Christmas Sale raises a significant part of the Shop’s outreach budget each year. Recent grants were given to a number of agencies and organizations, which included Casa Esperanza, Amigos del Valle, Los Alamos Self-Help, and the St. James Food Pantry in Taos. The Shop donated its Nov. 7 proceeds to Hurricane Sandy relief.
For bargain hunters who are conscious of their carbon footprint associated with traditional Christmas shopping, buying second hand at the Christmas Sale has other advantages.
Goods bought second hand avoid the high energy costs of production, packaging, and transportation of putting new goods on the shelf.
Purchasing items on the second hand market extends the useful life of products by giving them another home for someone else to enjoy, and by avoiding the landfill.
There is nothing more “green” than buying a recycled treasure from Shop on the Corner’s Christmas Sale.
Shop on the Corner also recycles donations. The Shop sometimes receives more donations than volunteers can sort or display, so extra items are sent to a thrift store in Bernal and to Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Items that are flawed but still usable are placed in a “free” bin in the entryway to the Shop. Anyone may take these items at no charge.
Shop on the Corner is open most Wednesdays. Regular hours are 8:45-11:45 a.m. and until 12:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month.
Donations of items in good to excellent condition may be dropped off at the Shop during business hours. Shop on the Corner cannot accept large items such as furniture.
