LAPS News:

Lia Rushton from Chamisa Elementary School placed  first in the elementary division of the 2018 Youth Art Month flag design contest.

The Council for Art Education (CFAE) administers Youth Art Month during March, which encourages support for quality school art programs. To promote Youth Art Month, the CFAE coordinates activities at the national level and the primary event is the State Flag Program.

Chamisa’s District Art Team Leader, Renee Mitsunaga, explained that during Youth Art Month, students engage in a problem-solving creativity project that inspires them to use art to communicate the given theme. This year’s theme was “Building Community through Art,” and each entry exemplified a symbolic New Mexico connection.

Rushton’s placement in the elementary division won Chamisa’s art program $500 worth of art supplies from Sargent Art, as well as a variety of art supplies for herself. This year’s designs were judged anonymously by a panel of Advanced Art students and adults from Roswell High School.

“Knowing the competition from Chamisa alone was really close, Lia was elated to have her poster chosen,” Mitsunaga said.

March is Youth Art Month and also Music in the Schools Month. For more information about upcoming events, visit the calendar of events at laschools.net.
