Celebrating National America’s SBDC Day

National SBDC day is a celebration of the impact SBDC’s have on the economy. America’s Small Business Development Center Network (SBDC) provides comprehensive support to help small businesses achieve their dream and drive economic growth. America’s SBDC is a nationwide network of nearly 1,000 local centers providing no-cost confidential business consulting, business training and research services to small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs.  

Julianna Martinez-Barbee, one of New Mexico SBDC Directors is ‘empowering dreams and igniting creative entrepreneurship’ by assisting small businesses to start, grow and compete in today’s AI digital world.  Barbee is noted for her local, state, national and international involvement and has been an advocate for improving opportunities for entrepreneurs.

“Julianna has been a force for SBDCs and for small business for her entire SBDC Career,” said C.E. “TEE” Rowe President & CEO of National America’s SBDC. “When I first met her, she was working tirelessly to support our America’s SBDC national marketing efforts and she has been vital in developing best practices to share with our networks. Every time I turned around there she was teaching, training, sharing and working to make America’s SBDCs the best-known resource rather than a best kept secret. New Mexico is lucky to have her and thank you for sharing her expertise with the rest of the SBDC world. Thanks and congratulations Julianna!” –

In the last three years economic impact data shows 2,796 total numbers of jobs created or saved by SBDC at Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) led by Barbee. For the past 23 years the SBDC at NNMC continues to be a top-performing SBDC under Barbee’s leadership,

“Northern New Mexico College is proud of the outstanding work of our Small Business Development Center in supporting the needs of the business community in the Española Valley and in our region,” said Hector Balderas, Northern New Mexico College President. “The work of Director Julianna Barbee and her team in providing the support businesses need to impact job creation and economic development is critical to our community, and we applaud them on their continued success.” Hector Balderas was the former attorney general for the state of New Mexico.

Through the years Barbee and SBDC at NNMC continues to be recognized as a top performer and has been awarded Job Creator of the Year and SBDC Center of the Year several times during the past ten years. Barbee has also received National State Star awards.

Barbee’s motto is to “help people live their passion, create a business legacy and unleash their creative spirit”.  Barbee is a certified business consultant specializing in marketing, multi-media and video production and is a National Stephan Covey Trainer in the 7 Habits for Small Business Managers. Barbee is helping businesses to reimagine, repurpose, reinvent and reignite their business. She is assisting businesses in job creation, business development, marketing, pitch decks, YouTube videos, social media videos and digital transformation.  

Barbee has served on the National America’s SBDC Marketing Committee for 23 years, and participates on boards and councils. Barbee also assists businesses in other areas of expertise: Business plans, Marketing plans, Video Production, Multimedia, Advertising, TV/Radio Broadcast, Public Relations, Public Speaking, Graphic Design, Websites, Photography, Legislative Outreach, and Economic Development.

Working for SBDC is Barbee’s third career.  Prior to joining the New Mexico SBDC Julianna worked for ABC-TV in Denver Colorado and also worked in TV in Phoenix, Arizona. Barbee also owned her own business. Julianna had a 25-year career in Broadcast Television and Marketing.  Julianna and her husband started their careers in the Television industry as anchors and reporters; Julianna also produced TV Commercials, was a Marketing Director, Account Executive and worked with National Advertising Agencies. Together with her husband they have also owned their own training business and are national trainers/speakers have worked with companies nationwide and presented at business conferences across the nation.

Barbee is currently involved with the following industries; artists, performing artists, musicians, film & media, ecotourism, eco building, traditional agriculture, traditional foods, creative cultural entrepreneurship, natural healing and health and wellness. Barbee is also an advocate for student mentorship.
