ART CENTER News:
Feel like shopping a bit on Black Friday, but don’t want to brave the crowds, long drives, and craziness?
Why not shop locally instead and celebrate Green Friday? Of course we encourage you to start with the 2013 Affordable Arts here at Fuller Lodge Art Center, and then move on to explore some of the “hidden” options for local holiday shopping in Los Alamos: the Co+op, PEEC, the Historical Museum gift shop and more.
The Art Center’s Affordable Arts show is a local holiday tradition. The Gallery Gift Shop spreads into the Exhibition Hall to create a magical Holiday Bazaar. This year over 130 local and regional artists are participating, offering an amazingly diverse range of unique hand-made fine arts and crafts. You’ll find gifts for the whole family! The Friday after Thanksgiving is the perfect time to snatch up a special, one-of-a-kind gift before it’s gone. FLAC is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Green Friday.
The Los Alamos Cooperative Market also has a great selection of gifts. While you may think of them as just a place to buy food (and yes, you’ll be able to find some delicious fair trade chocolate and other edible goodies) they also have a variety of gift items including fair trade African baskets, bowls and chopsticks for the Japanese food lover on your list, beautiful Chico bags, warm and fashionable hats, funny t-shirts, and much more. The Co+op is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Green Friday.
The Pajarito Environmental Education Center has a small but packed gift shop with something for every nature lover. They have books and field guides, nature themed earrings and pins, and tons of toys and games for indoor and outdoor play including small rubber critters, sturdy buckets, plush animals and craft kits. PEEC is open from 12 to 4 p.m. on Green Friday, and PEEC members get a 10% discount on all gift shop purchases.
The Historical Museum also has a wonderful bookstore and toy store. They’ve recently increased their stock so that people can fulfill all their gift needs locally. You can find books for adults and children on local history, gadgets and games, and, of course, the ever-popular toxic waste. And, they sell Christmas tree cutting permits! The Historical Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Green Friday.
Other great places to find gifts in town include the Los Alamos Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary Lobby Shop, where all proceeds benefit the good work done by the Auxiliary, and the WNPA Bookstore and Gift Shop at Bandelier National Monument, which features books, art and other items related to this beautiful National Park.
Satisfy your shopping and stay green! Fill up your stockings instead of your gas tank by shopping locally on Green Friday.
