PEEC Hosts Annual Bear Festival At Nature Center Aug. 28

PEEC News:

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is announces its annual Bear Festival is back in 2021. This one-of-a-kind celebration of local black bear neighbors and other wildlife is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 at the Los Alamos Nature Center on Canyon Road.

The festival will be packed full of fun activities for both kids and adults and include games, crafts, food and more. This event is sponsored by Century Bank.

Bear Festival will focus on educating the community about our local black bears and other wildlife neighbors. Throughout the day, visitors will learn about what people can do to keep both human and bear populations safe. Attendees will learn about wildlife in our area and managing human-wildlife interactions through educational booths from the National Park Service, the New Mexico Wildlife Center, Los Alamos County Environmental Services, Audubon Southwest, the Santa Fe National Forest, Los Alamos County Open Space and other organizations.

Making the festival fun for all ages, families can enjoy bear-themed story times from the Public Library, make wildlife masks with Fuller Lodge Art Center, craft origami wildlife, go on a scavenger hunt and more. The festival’s sponsor, Century Bank, will be giving out plush Century Bank bears to kids and bear bells to adults while supplies last. Enjoy lunch at Bear Festival from the Los Alamos CO+OP Market. Plus, have a drink from Bathtub Row Brewing Co-Op 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at their “Bear Garden”.

In addition to this year’s festival, PEEC will host its annual “Eat Like a Bear Dinner” the evening before the festival, starting at 6 p.m. Aug. 27. Catered by Pig + Fig Café, the event will feature foods inspired by the diet of a black bear. The evening’s menu will include Smoked Salmon Bites, Stuffed Mushrooms, Sweet Weeds, Bear-y Parfait, Trash Can Punch and more alongside drinks from Pajarito Brewpub & Grill. After the dinner, guests have the option to stay for a screening of Werner Herzog’s documentary film, “Grizzly Man.” Advance registration is required for the dinner and movie.
