SIPAPU News:
Spring at Sipapu means events, and two of the biggest, most anticipated are on tap this month.
First up Sunday, March 15, the annual celebration of all things duct tape, cardboard and twine: The Cardboard Derby. This zany contest of any and all kinds of cardboard vessels vying for a shot at glory is always a fun day.
Second is the March 21 Pond Skimming Contest across the handmade “Lake Sipapu”, a 75-foot-long, 3-foot-deep chilly dip at the base of the mountain.
Founded in 1952 founded by Lloyd and Olive Bolander, Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort is 20 miles southeast of Taos and two hours north of Albuquerque.
The resort offers these not-so-common amenities:
- The Riverside Cafe and Paradise Riverside Bar and Grill, featuring New Mexico’s best riverside dining;
- Slopeside lodging, including cabins, suites, historic lodge;
- The world-class Sipapu disc golf course ranked as one of the top five courses in the country; and
- Trout fishing steps from the slopeside accommodations.
Surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Carson National Forest, the resort has more than 40 trails, five lifts and three terrain parks.
