SANTA FE — Saturday, Feb. 9, the Sweetheart Auction returns for its 14th year—promising excitement, fascinating Live and Silent auction items, and a night dedicated to helping save lives.
The Sweetheart Auction raises essential funds for the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico (CFFNM), a local, independent nonprofit that helps cancer patients in northern New Mexico access treatment in Santa Fe.
All money raised stays in New Mexico to fund patient services for New Mexicans. This amazing night of giving and caring brings in nearly half of CFFNM’s annual budget and is a shining example of what true community spirit can do.
The Sweetheart Auction is an action-packed night where bidders vie for nearly 400 items—ranging from art to experiences to fine wines to jewelry. The highlight of the night is the Live Auction with 15 items of outstanding quality. Some of this year’s most exciting items include a one-week stay in Paris and glorious performance at Chateau Versailles, a fly fishing trip for two to Soaring Eagle Lodge along the San Juan River, a weeklong river cruise for two in Europe, a fabulous 13-day African safari from Africa Calls, and a catered dinner for 50 from award-winning Memphis-style eatery Whole Hog Café. Unparalleled artworks from both historic and contemporary artists also will be auctioned such as pieces by Gustave Baumann, Allan Houser, Star York and Jill Swaiko.
Buzz is growing for celebrity dinners with compelling guests of honor including NY Times best-selling author Douglas Preston and nuclear weapons and disarmament expert Dr. Siegfried Hecker. Proxy bidding on the Live Auction items will be available by calling (505).955.7931 ext. 2.
Due to popular demand, the special Secret Bid section returns and will be overseen by Ali MacGraw, one of Santa Fe’s most prominent citizens and longtime CFFNM supporter.
Items in the Secret Bid section go to the highest bidder—but the bidders cannot see what other people are bidding! The mystery makes for a thrilling experience.
“This is a true community event,” Corinne Collins, Executive Director of CFFNM said. “Cancer is an issue that touches nearly everyone. And the Sweetheart Auction is a wonderful Santa Fe event that combines a fun party with a great cause.”
One of the most emotionally moving elements of the Sweetheart Auction is the Honor Wall, a 3D art installation that features plaques “in honor of” and “in memory of” individuals who have experience with a cancer journey. It captures the deeper meaning of the Sweetheart Auction and the work of CFFNM.
The popular “Dream Vacation Raffle” also returns this year. One lucky winner gets to select a dream trip to one of four corners of the world: Iceland, Sydney (Australia), Fiji, or Costa Rica. Tickets are $100 each, with discounts for multiple tickets. A maximum of 2,000 tickets will be sold. The drawing will take place at the Sweetheart Auction, but the winner does not need to be present to win. Tickets are available at or by calling (505).955.7931, ext. 1.
Starting and completing cancer treatment is the first step to survivability. CFFNM and its donors understand that the financial and emotional stress of a cancer diagnosis and treatment can be overwhelming. CFFNM steps in to help cancer patients who qualify with travel reimbursement, overnight lodging near the treatment center, and grocery cards. No cancer patient who qualifies for CFFNM support is turned away. And all cancer patients, regardless of financial situation, can access professionally-led support groups and volunteers who provide one-on-one support in the treatment rooms.
The Sweetheart Auction, while fun and festive, has significance in terms of how it allows neighbors to help neighbors in northern New Mexico. “Each year we are so thankful to our attendees of the event, as well as many generous supporters and donors—all bearing witness to the important, lifesaving work of the Cancer Foundation,” Bud Hamilton, Chairman of the CFFNM Board said. “We are especially grateful to this year’s Co-Presenting Sponsors: Anchorum St. Vincent, CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, New Mexico Cancer Care Associates, Sweers, Stevens and Thompson at Merrill Lynch Santa Fe and X-Ray Associates of New Mexico.”
Other major supporters include Toyota of Santa Fe, Descartes Labs and Los Alamos National Bank.
The Sweetheart Auction is 5 p.m., Feb. 9, 2019 at the Santa Fe Convention Center. Admission is $100 per person and includes a dinner/dessert buffet by Peas ‘n’ Pod and an open wine and beer bar. To purchase event admission or raffle tickets, visit or call 505.955.7931, ext. 1.
