State News:
At approximately 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, a firefighter from the Caballo Volunteer Fire Department in Sierra County died in a tragic accident.
The firefighter was struck and severely injured when the fire apparatus was backing up to better warn and divert oncoming traffic at the scene of a one vehicle accident on Interstate 25 southbound.
Caballo Fire had been dispatched to the scene of the accident to provide aid and support. The firefighter was immediately rendered aid, but died as a result of the injuries.
New Mexico State Police investigated the incident and the firefighter is not being identified until State Police release their initial investigation.
