SPORTS News:LAHS Boys varsity tennis team continues to play at a high level this 2018 tennis season.
The boys spent the first weekend in March (2nd & 3rd) at the Belen Team Invitational competing against Belen H.S., Piedra Vista H.S., and Hope Christian.
The weekend was a great success with the Topper boys winning 30 out of 36 matches winning the 1st place team trophy. The boys’ varsity tennis program has 18 players that fill in to play numerous varsity events. Tennis team competition consists of 3 doubles and 6 singles with the need of 6 players at a minimum. That 18 number of players gives the boys program a solid 3 teams that can play interchangeably.
The Belen Invite needed 8 players due to the format of 4 doubles and 8 singles. The boys won singles flights 2 through 8 and doubles flights 2 through 4. The top singles and doubles flight were the only losses the Toppers took with Junior Thomas Chadwick sustaining an ankle sprain in his 2 nd round match. Players of the match were Sophomore Eli Iramk-Bent and Freshman Josh Posada for their mental toughness winning their singles matches against Belen and Piedra Vista in match tie-breakers.
March 9 and 10 was much of the same with the boy’s team sweeping the Capital High School Quad winning 27 of 27 matches. This event included St. Michael’s H.S., Belen H.S., Capital H.S., and Los Alamos.
The team showed their strength in doubles the first day with Amabilis Baca and Eli Iramk Bent beating Capital High School at the number 1 spot 6-0, 6-0, and Daniel Lee and Josh Posada winning their number 2 doubles 6-0, 6-0. The second day was led by the top two singles players Thomas Chadwick and Donald Poston respectively winning all of their matches Saturday, March 10.
The players of the match could have gone to anyone on the team, but was given to Thomas Chadwick, Jun Kim, and Donald Poston for their exceptional examples of sportsmanship and teamwork. Coach Lloyd Wilton said of Chadwick, Kim, and Poston, “These guys are always cheering their teammates on, mentoring their younger teammates, and showing the greatest respect to each opponent they compete against”.
The Topper boys will compete at home at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 15 at Urban Park against El Dorado High School and at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16 at Urban Park against La Cueva High School.
This will be a great match to have fan support, test how good the Topper boys really are. El Dorado and La Cueva come into the 2018 season as 6A state championship favorites.
