Staff Report

Close to 30 children ages 5 to 13 received Jiu-Jitsu belt promotions Saturday, March 12 at the Bankens Mountain Martial Arts Academy in downtown Los Alamos.

The kids showed off their skills and performed demonstrations in front of family and friends.

“I love teaching! The kids worked really hard to get here and seeing the looks on their faces when they received their new belt was priceless. I’m so proud of all they’ve accomplished,” Professor Kevin Bankens said.

Kevin ‘Conan’ Bankens moved his academy from Santa Fe to Los Alamos in August 2015. After more than 10 years he wanted to be closer to home and his wife, Evelyn who works at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Bankens teaches adult and kids Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing along with extreme core and body sculpting classes.

The academy is always looking for new family members of any age to join and discover how martial arts can change their lives. The academy is conveniently located at 181 Central Park Square, right next to Origami.
