Bear Wanders Near Los Alamos High School

STAFF REPORT

Los Alamos High School (LAHS) activated a shelter-in-place Monday after a bear was spotted in the vicinity of the school’s campus.

The shelter-in-place lasted approximately 15 minutes, LAHS Principal Carter Payne said. During the shelter-in-place, students stayed in the classrooms and instruction continued; however, the doors and windows were closed, he said.

Payne added there was no interaction between people and the bear. He said the School Resource Officer called Animal Control.

This is not the first time wildlife has wondered on the school campus, resulting in a shelter-in-place. Payne said, “We have done them numerous times since I came to LAHS in 2010.”

He added the school does take measures to deter wildlife from coming onto school property. Payne said, “We empty outdoor waste containers regularly-often immediately following our student lunch period. This keeps waste from lingering, and also prevents ravens/crows from spreading trash around.”
