NPS News:
Bandelier will be celebrating National Public Lands Day with special events and a fee free day on Saturday, Sept. 27.
In honor of National Public Lands Day and recognizing September as National Wilderness Month, the park will be hosting a Wilderness Project Day on Saturday, Sept. 27. The park is looking for up to 20 volunteers who would like to participate in a special project. Volunteers will work alongside park rangers and will spend the day building Beaver Dam Analogs (BDAs) in Frijoles Canyon. BDAs are intended to mirror the effects of natural beaver dams for the purpose of stream and riparian recovery, to provide suitable habitat for beaver and promote ecological recovery.
Due to the nature of the project, volunteers should be in good physical condition and be able to hike up to seven miles with a pack for the day and carry a hand tool or equipment into the project site. Volunteers should bring a backpack with food, at least two liters of water, sun protection, long sleeves, work gloves, and eye protection.
For any additional questions or if you are interested in signing up, email Sarah_Milligan@nps.gov or register at www.volunteer.gov and going to the Habitat Restoration at Bandelier opportunity. Sign up early as space is limited.
