Back By Popular Demand: Oppenheimer After Trinity Returns To SALA Event Center May 25-28

COUNTY News:

Following its sold-out world premiere showings in Los Alamos on Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer’s birthday, Oppenheimer After Trinity is returning to Los Alamos by popular demand.

The thought-provoking and insightful documentary, which features rare and intimate views into the mind of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, will show twice a day at SALA Event Center in Los Alamos May 25 to May 28. Showings  are 4-6:30 p.m. each day, and tickets are $12 per person.

Created by native New Mexican and descendant of a Manhattan Project worker, Larry L. Sheffield, the film features rare footage and photographs, along with compelling testimony from Dr. Oppenheimer’s grandson, Charles Oppenheimer.

In addition to sold-out premiere showings in Los Alamos, the film has received widespread international acclaim, winning a variety of awards from film festivals, including Best Historical Documentary at the Cannes World Film Festival, Best Educational Film at the World Film Carnival in Singapore, Awards of Excellence in Script Writing and Documentary Short at the Best Shorts Competition in Los Angeles, Best Documentary Short and Best Producer at Indie Short Fest in Los Angeles, and a Platinum Award for Best Documentary Short at Independent Short Awards.

“It’s an honor to return to Los Alamos for additional showings,” filmmaker Larry L. Sheffield said. “The response we received from the first showings was incredible, and we had so many people asking for additional showings, we wanted to honor the love that Los Alamos locals have for their history and their town by returning in May. We invite all to come and experience this rare, personal look at the people and stories before, during and after the atomic bomb test in New Mexico.”

“Los Alamos is known globally as the birthplace of groundbreaking science, and we’re proud to showcase the work of Larry Sheffield and this second installment of a planned trilogy that speaks to the history and founding of our town,” said Kelly Stewart with Los Alamos County’s Economic Development Division. “As Los Alamos and the world at large prepare for the release of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer this summer, having a localized look at the people and places of the Manhattan Project through Oppenheimer After Trinity is incredibly impactful. We invite all out to learn about the project and view rare photographs and interviews through Larry’s film.”

In addition to Oppenheimer After Trinity, SALA will be hosting The Manhattan Project Film Series July 1–20, 2023, offering diverse perspectives and true stories from the Manhattan Project.
