Auditions Open To Be New Voice Of Zozobra Or Sing National Anthem

SANTA FE — The Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe announces tryouts for two incredible opportunities to be part of Santa Fe’s most historic tradition, the Burning of Zozobra!

Here’s your big chance to perform before a live crowd and a television and webcast audience of hundreds of thousands for the 98th Annual Burning of Zozobra!

This year, there’s a hot new opportunity –– auditioning to be the Voice of Zozobra, unseen but heard by a global audience that can’t wait to yell “BURN HIM” back at the monster you are growling for!

“People come to Santa Fe from all over the world to witness the Burning of Zozobra,” says Event Chair Ray Sandoval. “Young or old, male or female, new to Zozobra or a seasoned fan, we can’t wait to find an amazing voice to bellow a scary growl and wicked laugh to make Santa Fe’s favorite monster come to life.”

HERE’S HOW TO TRY OUT!

Auditions will be held in person 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9 at the Scottish Rite Center, the big pink building located at 463 Paseo de Peralta in Santa Fe. Tryouts will take place on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If you are chosen as the Voice of Zozobra, you will work with the Zozobra team to learn the flow of the pageant so that you’re able to work in sync with the animation team that makes Zozobra’s mouth move.

As Zozobra’s Voice, you are required to attend the following mandatory rehearsals and the main event, the 98th Burning of Zozobra Friday, Sept. 2:

  • 11 a.m. Sat., Aug. 20, at Fort Marcy Park
  • 11 a.m. Sat., Aug. 27 at Ft. Marcy Park
  • 8-10 p.m. Wed., Aug. 31 at Ft. Marcy Park
  • 6 pm until the event concludes Fri, Sep. 2, The 98th Burning of Zozobra at Ft. Marcy Park 

An alternate will also be selected and will also be required to attend rehearsals and the event should the new voice be unable to perform.

WANT TO SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AT ZOZOBRA? HERE’S HOW TO TRY OUT!

Like to sing the high notes? A very meaningful part of this annual tradition is the singing of the National Anthem, and the National Anthem Competition is open to performers of all ages to sing for Zozobra. The winner will be welcomed to perform the National Anthem at the Burning of Zozobra Friday, Sept. 2.

In-person auditions will be held 1-4 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at the Scottish Rite Center, the big pink building located at 463 Paseo de Peralta in Santa Fe. Tryouts will take place on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If you are chosen as the National Anthem Singer, you will be required to attend the following mandatory rehearsals and the main event, the 98th Burning of Zozobra Friday, Sept. 2:

  • 11 a.m. Sat., Aug. 20, at Fort Marcy Park
  • 11 a.m. Sat., Aug. 27 at Ft. Marcy Park
  • 8-10 p.m. Wed., Aug. 31 at Ft. Marcy Park
  • 6 pm until the event concludes Fri, Sep. 2, The 98th Burning of Zozobra at Ft. Marcy Park

A first runner-up will be selected as an alternate and will be required to attend both the rehearsals and the event in case the National Anthem Singer should be unable to perform.

In addition, the first runner-up will be given the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the 2022-23 New Year’s Eve on the Santa Fe Plaza. The Second runner-up will sing the National Anthem at the City of Santa Fe’s 2023 Fourth of July celebration
