ACRR News:

The 42nd season of the Pace Race series conducted by the Atomic City Road Runners Club will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 7 at the Canyon Rim Trailhead parking lot across from the Co-operative Market on East Road (N.M. 502).

The Club will meet Tuesdays at various locations throughout Los Alamos County through early October.

The Atomic City Road Runners Club is a family-oriented walking and running club that meets every Tuesday April through October for a pace race in which members predict their own time. Anyone can choose to walk or run for one mile or three miles, and the slowest walker can be a winner if his or her finish time is closest to that predicted.

The first and last meetings are the Cooper Run, a 1.5 mile course to measure aerobic capacity. Using tables developed by Dr. Ken Cooper (which adjusts points for altitude, gender and age) joggers can determine present fitness and check again at the end of the season to measure improvement.

During the season, pace races are held on various streets and trails throughout Los Alamos County. Registration immediately precedes each run with a 50-cent fee for members and students (high school age and below) and $1.50 for non-members. Members who participate in at least 10 runs get a special club T-shirt at the end of the season (members who choose to sponsor a race receive double credit for that run).

The season culminates in November with the Annual CROP Walk/Turkey Trot sponsored in conjunction with CROP and LA Cares, two charity organizations. Turkeys and pumpkin pies are awarded by random drawing.

Dues are $20 for an individual and $30 for a family membership.
