The Children’s Clinic and Assets in Action will host the second free presentation in a series of health and youth development topics at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5 at Mesa Public Library.

The topic of the evening is Asthma and Allergies, presented by Dr. Michael Nichols and Patricia McCulloch, PA, of the Children’s Clinic.

The pair, along with the youth development program, hopes to inform parents with helpful hits and things to look for, especially as the seasons change.

“We look forward to educating members of the community and finding out what questions and concerns they have as they encounter asthma and allergic disease in children,” Dr. Nichols said. “We would like to talk to families about controlling allergies and asthma, instead of letting the allergies and asthma control their kids’ lives.”

‘One thing is for sure, for those who haven’t received their flu vaccinations, there’s no better time than today,” Dr. Nichols said. “We also note a surge in asthma and reactive airway disease worsened by respiratory illnesses in the fall and winter. Hopefully, lots of kids are getting vaccinated against the flu already this fall.”

“The excellent care that my children have received at the Children’s Clinic since birth drew me to want to become part of this clinic as a professional,” McCulloch said. She is in her fifth year at the Children’s Clinic and her tenth year as a Physician’s Assistant.

McCulloch grew up in Los Alamos, completing her undergraduate degree in basic sciences, with minors in biology and psychology, from New Mexico Tech in 2001. She then headed to the University of St. Francis where she received a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies in 2004. As an undergraduate, she also worked in the mental health field, at Los Alamos National Laboratory in biosciences, while doing research in diabetes through the University of New Mexico.

Dr. Nichols has an undergraduate degree from Texas A&M and attended medical school in San Antonio, Texas. He completed his pediatrics residency in Tucson, Ariz. He has practiced locally for more than 31 years.
