Aspen Elementary School Physical Education Teacher Adam Garcia organized the first school-wide outdoor “Field Day,” in which all 400 Aspen students spent Thursday afternoon participating in races, hulahoop contests, water balloon relay and other field events at the school.
The Los Alamos Fire Department treated the kids to tours inside fire trucks and an ambulance. Other events included square dancing and the chicken dance.
Aspen Princpal Kathryn Vandenkieboom told the Los Alamos Daily Post, “The children have been anticipating Field Day for the last couple of weeks and they are just thrilled to be outside and playing games. It has been a highly anticipated event and it is the first time we have done an event like a track and field day at Aspen.
It was brought to us by our new PE teacher, Adam Garcia. He organized the whole thing and we are learning all kinds of lessons now that we have gotten into it. I think we will have a lot of fun. The kids are having so much fun. It’s good for them to be out in the sun and thank goodness summer is on its way.”
Colin Hemez, a junior at Los Alamos High School helped organize the races. Members of the Los Alamos High School cross country team helped marshal the field events. The event organizers would like to thank the Los Alamos Cooperative Market for providing snacks for the kids during Thursday’s Field Day.
