This is an update from the Jan. 23 meeting of the Art in Public Places Advisory Board.

Art in public places helps to create beautiful public spaces and the Art in Public Places Advisory Board values community input.

The latest ongoing work being pursued by the Board includes:

  • The Board is accepting applications for new members;
  • The Board is continuing to assess remaining indoor art and working toward identifying indoor artwork in need of repair;
  • Finalized request for artwork proposals from J. Muzacz for south facing wall surrounding Justice Center;
  • Working Group to create art celebrating homestead families working with County to conduct a survey of Barranca neighborhood for proposed project at Los Pueblos park. The proposed idea includes a playground, art installation and garden;
  • Created a working group to develop a “Call for Art” to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of PEEC. Members of the working group are Tim Foley, Kristen Dors and Nan Sauer; and
  • Board received several art proposals for the Betty Ehart Center gate. Proposals will be evaluated at the February meeting,

Funding for the acquisition of art is defined within the Los Alamos County Code, Sections 20-364 and 20-365. Changes to the Art in Public Places Advisory Board funding would require changes to be made to the County Code.

Funding sources defined by the County Code:

  • 1% of the budget of any capital improvement projects, whose budget exceeds $20,000.
  • 0.5% of the budget of any road project.

The public is welcome to attend the next meeting of the Arts in Public Places Board scheduled for 5:30-7 p.m. in person in Room 110 at the Municipal Building, 1000 Central Ave., and Via Zoom. Learn more, here.
