PEEC News:

Enjoy the beauty of the Arctic Islands, only recently opened to eco-tourism, from the comfort of the Los Alamos Nature Center.

Saturday, Jan. 9 at 10:30 a.m. in the nature center planetarium, Stephen A. Becker will present photos from his voyage to West Greenland and the North Canadian Islands. See wildlife, glaciers, icebergs, geology, interesting sky phenomena, and Inuit settlements from this remote region.

Part 1 of this event took place Tuesday, where Becker showed a film from the trip. It was well attended. Those who saw the movie stayed afterward to ask questions and learn more. Saturday’s event will be just as engaging.

Becker has been a resident of Los Alamos since 1983. He is a Laboratory Fellow in XTD Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He has a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign. Becker is the president of the local Pajarito Astronomy Club. His interest in exploring the far northern and southern parts of the globe led him to take National Geographic Explorer trips to the Svalbard Islands, the Falkland Islands, S. Georgia Island, and the Palmer Peninsula in Antarctica.

The Arctic Islands presentation will take place at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 2600 Canyon Road. They are free to attend, and no registration is required. For more information about this and other Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) programs, visit, email or call 505.662.0460.
