Staff Report:
Los Alamos County is now accepting applications for its new Retail Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) Program, a funding initiative designed to help retail businesses expand services, create jobs, and strengthen the local economy.
The program provides funding for retail projects that address key community needs, including food services, clothing and apparel sales, personal and health care, and tourism-related businesses.
LEDA funds may be applied toward capital infrastructure, building improvements, storefront, accessibility, and code compliance upgrades.
Grants are available in amounts ranging from $20,000 to $100,000, in $20,000 increments. Larger or more complex projects may qualify for additional support through LEDA loans.
“The LEDA for Retail initiative gives local businesses another tool to invest in their future while enhancing quality of life for residents and visitors,” said Anita Barela, Los Alamos County Economic Development Program Manager. “By reducing retail leakage and expanding essential services, this program can help keep dollars in our community.”
Community Development Department Director Elias Isaacson agreed, saying that the new program will benefit the whole community.
“The LEDA for Retail program demonstrates the County’s commitment to both economic development and community well-being,” he said. “Staff developed and launched this program in support of the Council’s Strategic Goals to improve the economic vitality of the community. By supporting local businesses, we’re building a stronger, more diverse local economy and making our County a more dynamic and vibrant place to live.”
Applicants must demonstrate a clear public benefit, be current on taxes, and comply with all planning, zoning, and environmental requirements. Applications will undergo a two-part review process, with final approval by the Los Alamos County Council.
