Dr. Michael Anastasio

Norman J. Pattiz, chairman of the Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS) and Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) Boards of Governors, today announced that Dr. Michael Anastasio has been appointed as a University of California Advisory Governor on the LANS and LLNS Boards.
Anastasio also is a member of the LLCs’ Mission Committee. His appointment takes effect immediately.
“Mike has the distinction of serving as Lab Director at both Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories with 34 years of university service. He is a renowned national security expert and a highly respected leader and scientific advisor to the federal government, the national laboratory complex, academia and the broad scientific community. No one has his combination of management experience, national security expertise and detailed working knowledge of the national labs, the University of California and the LLCs,” Pattiz said. “The depth and breadth of Mike’s knowledge and expertise is invaluable and supports the university’s key role of assuring the labs’ science and technology excellence.”
“It is a privilege to be appointed to the Board of Governors,” Anastasio said. “I am deeply committed to helping in the success of both of these important institutions and to seeing that the scientific and engineering excellence resident at each flourishes.”
Anastasio joined Livermore as a nuclear physicist focused on the science of nuclear design and was instrumental in the development and execution of the national Stockpile Stewardship Program. Currently he serves on the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Science Board, the U.S. Department of State’s International Security Advisory Board, and as a Member of the Draper Laboratory Corporation. He is special advisor to the Commander, US STRATCOM and is a member of the Congressional Advisory Panel on the Governance of the Nuclear Security Enterprise and of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Peer Review and Design Competition at the NNSA Laboratories.
He received his B.A., with Honors, from The Johns Hopkins University and Ph.D. in Theoretical Nuclear Physics from the Stony Brook University. He performed research in physics in Saclay, France and Julich, West Germany and was a Visiting assistant professor at Brooklyn College.
