Alzheimer’s Advocacy Event 2021 Goes Virtual For New Mexico State Legislature

Alzheimer’s Association News:

Albuquerque Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which has severely limited in-person gatherings, the Alzheimer’s Association, New Mexico Chapter announces the details of its ‘Alzheimer’s Advocacy Event 2021’ that will now take place “virtually” during the current state 60-day legislative session – which also is being held virtually.

During previous sessions, this special event has traditionally taken place annually in the Roundhouse and attended by state legislators, top-ranking officials of state government, and the NM Chapter’s volunteer advocates. It has provided a valuable opportunity for all affected by Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia to discuss, advocate and increase awareness among state legislators. This year, due to the pandemic, the chapter is bringing this meaningful gathering to a virtual platform.

Further, an invitation has been extended to the public to attend this first virtual ‘Alzheimer’s Advocacy Event 2021’, scheduled for 1-2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16.

“Things are a bit different this year,” said Tommy Hernandez (Public Policy Director, Alzheimer’s Association, NM Chapter), chief organizer of the event. “But rest assured, the session being held virtually does not deter our mission. Our chapter stands ready to engage in the virtual space with our expertise and our advocacy. We have adapted our methods to meet any challenges a virtual legislative session might bring, and feel confident in our ability to participate in the process in an impactful manner.”

Hernandez cites the Alzheimer’s Association’s grass-roots-led advocacy as responsible for making their public policy voice one of the most effective and respected among all health-issue organizations. “Our statewide network of volunteer advocates stand ready with us,” Hernandez said. “With their continued dedication, we will successfully advance new legislation and ensure the preservation of critical state programs and services that New Mexicans facing Alzheimer’s and dementia, and their caregivers, rely on.”

This event is free of charge.

Today, over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease.  By 2050, the total number is expected to rise to nearly 14 million. It is the 6th leading cause of death in the USA*.

Currently, there is no prevention, proven treatment or cure for Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer’s takes a devastating toll, not just on those with the disease, but on entire families. In our own state, 43,000 New Mexicans over age 65 are living with Alzheimer’s disease and there are 108,000 unpaid dementia caregivers, many of whom are family members, contributing 123 million hours of care valued at $1.6 billion.

Adapting to the current COVID-19 crisis, the Alzheimer’s Association, New Mexico Chapter is continuing their mission by offering many free resources electronically.
