AFTNM Reacts To Judicial Ruling Against Mora ISD

AFTNM News:

  • District Ordered to Reinstate Wrongfully Terminated Employees; Comply with Previous Arbitrator Decision

MORA – American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Stephanie Ly, Mora Federation of School Employees Union President Faith Rivera and Mora Federation of School Employees Union Members Edwina Romero, Paulyette Perea and Lisa Yescas released today the following statement:

“We are extremely happy New Mexico District Court Judge Alan Malott has ruled in favor of three wrongfully terminated Mora Independent School District employees, affirming the April 2017 decision of a New Mexico arbitrator in this issue, despite last minute and improper attempts by lawyers for the Mora Independent Schools District to further delay this decision.

“As part of Judge Malott’s ruling, the Mora Independent School District has been ordered to reinstate all three employees with paid full back pay and benefits, as well as maintaining each of the employees’ seniority within the District. Additionally, Judge Malott has granted AFT NM the ability to petition the Court to have all legal fees associated with this process be paid by the Mora Independent School District.

“Today is another victory for educational employees in New Mexico and a reminder that strong, collectively bargained contracts protect employees from wrongful actions, and worker rights must be respected and enforced in all of New Mexico’s public school districts. We call upon the Mora community to tell the Mora Independent Schools Board of Education to stop wasting scarce resources, reinstate all three educators immediately, and return the District’s focus to providing a quality public education for all Mora students.”
