About HB33 Referendum School Board Resolution

 

The Los Alamos Public Schools Board unanimously supports the upcoming HB33 Mill Levy Election.

All voters residing within the boundaries of the Los Alamos Public School District who are registered by Dec. 29, 2015 are eligible to vote. Los Alamos County Clerk will mail the ballot to all registered voters. You need not be a property owner or have students attending public schools.

What Is The HB33 Mill Levy?

Approved by voters since 1988

  • Provides public schools with funds for capital improvements expenditures, including student technology, and large maintenance projects.
  • $3.246 per $1,000 assessed valuation (a $300,000 home pays approximately $324.60 per year).
  • Requires voter approval.

No tax rate increase.

 

The Cost

Approval of the HB33 Mill Levy is a continuation of tax that has been in place in previous years and will not result in a tax rate increase.

Revenues from HB33 will generate funds over the next six years that will be used for capital improvements throughout the district.

 
The Ballot

 
The District voters have approved the HB33 Mill Levy election in the past for needed school improvements.
 
Passage of the HB33 Mill Levy election will provide approximately $2,216,646 annually to make important improvements at the
Districts facilities.
 
The HB33 election will be a mail-in ballot only.
 

Current & Recurring Needs 

 

Student Technology and District-wide network infrastructure;
Music Instrument purchase and replacement;
Athletic supplies and equipment for curriculum needs and extracurricular sports and activities;
Heating/Cooling projects for older buildings: Pinon, Mountain, LAHS, LAMS, Barranca and Chamisa;
Restroom upgrades in older buildings;
General Maintenance:
  • Exterior Painting projects
  • Sidewalk replacement/improvements
  • Roof repairs
  • Stairs and handicapped ramps
  • Drainage issues
HVAC scheduled equipment replacement/Boiler system repairs and replacement; and
Improved PA systems and new Fire Panels with addressable systems.

  • Bus Lane and parking lot resurface and striping Pinon
  • Chamisa Geodesic dome, landscape and marquee
  • All Student Technology purchased to date
  • District Computer Servers
  • Barranca emergency roof repair (insurance deductible)
  • ATV snow plow for Aspen
  • Seats and Carpet at Smith Auditorium
  • Mountain exterior stairs
The HB33 Mill Levy election will be a mail-in ballot only. Ballots must be RECEIVED by mail and/or dropped off to Los Alamos County Clerk’s office (1000 Central Dr.) no later than 7 p.m., Jan. 26, 201.

Title: LAPS School Board commitment to maintain HB33 referendum expenditures in the School District at current levels.

  • Whereas, the LAPS School Board recognizes the responsibility to inform the Los Alamos community and its citizens on the upcoming HB33 referendum election.  
  • Whereas, the LAPS School Board understands the need to be transparent to the community as to our commitment to how these funds will be spent.
  • Whereas, this HB33 referendum funding is vital to supplement the School District’s facilities maintenance, Information Technology acquisitions, equipment for physical education and music programs, and activity busses.
  • Whereas, this HB33 referendum funding is presented for renewed by the voters of Los Alamos County every six years.
  • Whereas, this mil levy is currently in place and passing the HB33 referendum proposition will not increase the taxes of the citizens of Los Alamos County.
  • Whereas, the current level to be maintained is a 3.246 mil levy, this equates to $108 of taxes for every $100,000 of appraised value for residential and nonresidential property.
  • Whereas, HB33 referendum funds provide roughly $2.25 million dollars annually for the LAPS School District.
  • Whereas, the special election will be a mail-in ballot. Ballots will be mailed on January 5, 2016 and are due to the Los Alamos County Clerk’s office no later than 7:00PM on January 26, 2016 (physically in their office, 1000 Central Avenue, Suite 240).
  • Whereas, the LAPS School Board encourages all eligible Los Alamos County voters to complete and submit their ballot.
  • NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the 15th day of December 2015, the LAPS School Board is committed to maintaining HB33 referendum funds at current levels.
  • BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the LAPS School Board understands the importance to purchase computers for students and teachers, maintain facilities, develop infrastructure, and support our music and PE programs.
