The County has announced that a water leak under the westbound lane of N.M. 4 in White Rock is causing the pavement to sag. The underground water pipeline under this section of road was replaced earlier this year.
Wagner Construction, the Minnesota-based company contracted by Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities for the work, has mobilized crews expected to arrive Friday afternoon in Los Alamos.
In the meantime, the westbound lane was closed for a short period this afternoon so steel plates could be placed over the sagging section until the contractor arrives to make repairs. With the steel plates in place, the lane will remain open until repair work begins.
The eastbound lanes are not affected by this leak. However, all drivers, west- and eastbound, are asked to drive cautiously past this area in consideration of the workers on the road. Once Wagner crews arrive, they will use the Tewa gas station parking lot for staging.
The cause of the water leak is not yet known. A previous leak that occurred in May on the eastbound side of the road was caused by a faulty gasket.
