ART News:

After years on tour, Master Peace is finally home at ORIGAMIINTHEGARDEN. Soaring into the sky, this towering 25-foot monumental sculpture is a tribute to the powerful story of Sadako Sasaki and the legend of 1,000 paper cranes. Master Peace is a collection of one thousand cast metal cranes as a wish for peace. Five hundred cranes are scattered around the world as individual sculptures, and five hundred are gathered in this 25-foot-tall monument. “Rather than a memorial to the tragedies of the past, I want this to be a monument to the future, like wishing wells, that bring joy, excitement and hope for what lies ahead.” Jennifer Box Created by Santa Fe artists Jennifer and Kevin Box, ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN is a monumental outdoor sculpture exhibition.

Kevin Box takes origami to another level, transforming paper into museum-quality metal sculptures through processes he pioneered in teamwork with foundries, fabrication shops, and his studio staff. These remarkable artworks feel at home in the wondrous settings of gardens, since paper originates in plant life and origami is made of paper.

The exhibit features Box’s compositions and collaborations with world- renowned origami artists Tim Armijo, Te Jui Fu, Beth Johnson, Michael G. LaFosse, and Robert J. Lang.

Set against the wild beauty of the New Mexico desert, this show brings together larger-than-life metal sculptures inspired by the delicate art of origami—each piece telling a story of creativity, transformation, and harmony with nature.

Kevin Box says, “Origami presents a simple metaphor: When we begin with a blank page, what we do with it is up to us, and the possibilities are endless.”

Nestled in the Little Garden of the Gods on Highway 14, a National Scenic Byway, ORIGAMIINTHEGARDEN is the private studio, sculpture garden, and residence of artists Jennifer and Kevin Box. With lofty rock formations encompassing the three-acre sculpture garden, visitors meander through a distinct southwest landscape, discovering sculpture along the way.

Located at 3453 NM 14, Cerrillos NM 87010, the garden is open to the public seasonally with weekday hours

9 a.m.–1 p.m., May 5-Oct. 31, 2025. Tickets are not required, but a suggested donation of $10.00 per person is greatly appreciated. Children aged 16 and under are admitted free.

The Turquoise Trail Studio Tour is the only time the garden is open on weekends, which are the last two weekends in September. The tour dates this season are Sept. 20-21 and Sept. 27-28. ORIGAMIINTHEGARDEN is also open on numerous federal holidays, such as Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Labor Day, and Indigenous People’s Day.

This summer’s programming comprises of more than 20 outdoor displays beneath the 32′ tall crown jewel Scents of Gratitude. This imposing piece is enhanced with kinetic flowers that drift in the breeze among vibrantly colored flower pinwheels that spin fiercely. Visitors should also be sure to experience the interior exhibit, INSIDE OUT at the Gallery & Gift Shop to explore the beauty of the unfolded interior patterns from the origami sculptures.

Besides being on display in New Mexico, the exhibition also travels the nation, currently hosted at Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando, FL, and Tulsa Botanic Garden in Tulsa, OK. Peace River Sculpture & Botanical Gardens in Punto Gordo, FL will host ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN this September. “We are thrilled to announce the upcoming ORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN exhibit, which beautifully blends art and nature,” said Jennifer D’hollander, Executive Director of Harry P. Leu Gardens.” This unique collection of outdoor sculptures celebrates the intricate artistry of origami, brought to life on a grand scale. We’re excited to offer our visitors an immersive experience that inspires wonder and creativity.”

Chuck Lamson, President and CEO of the Tulsa Botanic Garden, notes his excitement about bringing FLORIGAMI IN THE GARDEN to his state. He looks forward to “having everyone experience and be inspired by this nationally acclaimed art set within our beautiful horticultural displays. Kevin’s Oklahoma connection and the fact that he’s premiering new pieces in Tulsa make it that more special.”

All locations have different exhibits to complement each garden’s space and community. No matter the location, visitors are sure to have an exciting and memorable experience, taking in the natural beauty of the area as well as the artwork. The summer is a great time for a road trip, and catching one of these exhibits will be a highlight of any adventure!
