The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) invites the community to an evening of celestial wonder at the Los Alamos Nature Center Planetarium. Join physicist and science educator Elizabeth Watts for Astrophotography: Auroras and Comets—a fascinating look at two recent, awe-inspiring events in the night sky, 7-8 p.m. Friday, May 9.
In October 2024, a rare geomagnetic storm made the aurora visible as far south as Los Alamos. During this presentation, Watts will explore the science behind auroras, how geomagnetic storms occur, and share stunning images captured by local photographers of the phenomenon.
Attendees will also learn about a brilliant comet that lit up the sky during the same period. The program will include an interactive segment in the planetarium, tracking the comet’s orbit and viewing more astrophotography from the event.

Planetarium programs are not recommended for children under age 4.

Elizabeth Watts, a PEEC staff member, holds a Ph.D. in Physics and brings a lifelong passion for science education and the outdoors. Her engaging programs blend scientific insight with personal curiosity, aiming to inspire a deeper connection with the natural world.
