Los Alamos High School juniors Irina Maiorov and Carlos Martinez construct a hydroponic apparatus for seedlings during the first annual Youth Climate Summit held Friday at Los Alamos High School. The high school Ecology Club sponsored the event, which was attended by high school students from Moreno Valley, Espanola Valley, Taos and Las Vegas, N.M. Ian Corey, who is co-president of the Ecology Club along with Samuel Carmer, explained the purpose behind the summit was to share ideas about climate change, sustainable initiatives and activities. Besides the hydroponic activity, students learned about pollinators and took a hike to Acid Canyon. Los Alamos High School teacher Christina Hum, who supports the Ecology Club, said seeing the students’ hard work made her hopeful. ‘I’m passionate about our youth,’ she said. ‘I believe they are amazing people; they’re going to do amazing things … it makes me very hopeful.’ State Coordinator Citizens’ Climate Lobby New Mexico State Coordinator Sara Mason added, ‘They are the reason why we have to save the planet.’ Photo by Kirsten Laskey/ladailypost.com
