NMSP Investigates Shooting Of Child At Home In Clayton

CLAYTON – On Oct. 29, 2024, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Investigations Bureau investigated a shooting at 301 Magnolia St. in Clayton. 

Investigations Bureau agents learned at approximately 7:30 a.m., Clayton Police Department officers were dispatched to 301 Magnolia St. in reference to an 8-year-old female that had been shot inside the residence.

Agents later learned Gio Blan, 17, was at home with his siblings getting ready for school when he pointed what he thought was an unloaded handgun, at his 8-year-old sister and pulled the trigger, striking her in the head. The siblings then attempted to provide medical attention before calling 911.

After the shooting, Blan disassembled the gun and threw it in a nearby dumpster, where it was later recovered.

Blan’s sister was taken to an area hospital and then later flown to a hospital in Texas, where her condition is listed as critical. 

The firearm used did not belong to anyone inside the residence.

Blan was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, negligent use of a deadly weapon, and tampering with evidence. He was transported and booked into the San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center.

This incident remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.
