Celebrate Nature, Space, Technology And More At 2022 Los Alamos ScienceFest July 12-17

Los Alamos — where discoveries are made — announces the return of the town’s iconic annual event, Los Alamos ScienceFest. Running July 12–17, this year’s event features hands-on activities, an electric vehicle show, movies, concerts, lectures and family fun events.

“Los Alamos is the home of groundbreaking science, and ScienceFest offers a unique opportunity for visitors from all over to experience this culture of discovery firsthand,” Los Alamos County Marketing Manager Kelly Stewart said. “We invite all to come celebrate science and technology and create fun summer memories for every member of the family in Los Alamos.”

With the goal of making science fun and more accessible, as well as inspiring a passion for STEAM topics in youth, ScienceFest will feature six days of events, including Discovery Day on Saturday, July 16.

On Tuesday, July 12, enjoy live music at the Tuesdays @ The Pond Series, featuring Belisama Irish Dancers followed by The Hill Stompers at Ashley Pond Park Pavillion. Wednesday, July 13, features a focus on animals and agriculture with bee-shaped art, pollination games, a summer family evening with local livestock, and a showing of The Mitchells Vs. The Machines at Ashley Pond Park.

Continuing Thursday, July 14, participate in an author talk with Dr. John Mack. His talk is titled, “The Believer: Alien Encounters, Hard Science, and the Passion of John Mack”, and will be held through the Mesa Public Library and Suds ‘n Shows: “Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan” at the Los Alamos Nature Center Planetarium. On Friday, July 15, catch The Red Elvises in concert at Ashley Pond Park.

Discovery Day is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 16, and features a variety of interactive, hands-on activities for all ages, along with food trucks, live music, and a recycled fashion show at Ashley Pond Park, as well as a downtown electric vehicle show courtesy of Pajarito Environmental Education Center.

The Bradbury Science Museum also will feature two interactive Challenge: Tomorrow trailers.

Events culminate Sunday, July 17 with a movie at dusk at Bathtub Brewing Co-op on the outdoor patio. The showing of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids will include trivia for prizes, as well as lessons on beer chemistry.

Tours of the Los Alamos Historic District will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday, as well as 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. during Saturday’s Discovery Day.

Tours start about 1,000 years ago and walks visitors through the ancestral Puebloans, homesteading, the Los Alamos Ranch School, the Manhattan Project, Cold War and contemporary Los Alamos. There is an emphasis on espionage, cultures, and answering visitor questions.

Cost is $20, with the tour lasting between 1 1/2 – 2 hours. While in town, visitors can further immerse in Los Alamos history and science with the self-guided Los Alamos Spy Tour or the Kwage Mesa Interpretive Trail.
