LAFLL News:
Young robotics teams from Los Alamos got to showcase their hard work at the local Los Alamos FLL qualifying tournament and at the New Mexico FIRST LEGO League State Championship Tournament, for teams who advanced.
The Los Alamos FLL Qualifying Tournament was Dec. 14, 2019 at Los Alamos Middle School, and hosted by FRC Team 4153, Project Y, headed by Coach Andrew Erickson.
The event drew eight FLL teams from Northern New Mexico as well as two FLL Jr. teams.
The Los Alamos FLL Qualifier was well attended, and qualified three local teams to compete at the state NMFLL Championship:
- Core Values Award – Wild Cards from Santa Fe
- Project Award – CyberSonics from Barranca Mesa
- Robot Design Award – The Marshmallows
- Robot Games High Score – Robotic Beasts
The Champion’s Trophy was awarded to the team with high accomplishments in all three competition areas, this year to the Quadrumaniacs. The Quadrumaniacs also were nominated for the Global Innovation Award on their ice traction invention.
The qualifying event also included an Expo featuring the FLL Jr teams, who were awarded the following trophies:
- “Little Einsteins” Award – Chamisa’s Power Builders, and
- “Picasso Award” – Happy Little Animals.
The Quadrumaniacs, CyberSonics and Marshmallows were advanced to the NMFLL State Championship, held on February 15th at Menaul School in Albuquerque. Los Alamos teams again fared well. The Quadrumaniacs won the 2nd Place Champion’s Award and were invited to attend the LEGOLAND FIRST LEGO League Open, May 15-17. The CyberSonics won the Project Research Award and were listed as first alternate for post-season tournaments.
These robotics teams would like to thank the community for their continued support. Project Y and the participating teams would like to thank the LAFLL event sponsors: ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), Northern New Mexico Chapter, Los Alamos Public Schools (especially Los Alamos Middle School), and Merrick & Co.
The Quadrumaniacs would like to thank our past sponsors including ASME, LAPS, TechSource, Bradbury Science Museum Association, New Mexico Bank & Trust, Los Alamos Children’s Dentistry, LANS, Los Alamos Medical Center, the local chapter of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Los Alamos Women in Science, Pajarito Masonic Lodge and Dr. Rachel Meyer.
The Quadrumaniacs will be again seeking sponsorships, donations and fundraising opportunities to travel to California to compete in May.
