UNM-LA News:
The University of New Mexico – Los Alamos (UNM-LA) is offering a workshop to assist students (and their families) in completing the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA), 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4.
The process and the deadlines of completing the FAFSA have changed and UNM-LA has planned this event to provide assistance. The workshop will be held in a computer lab in Building 6 on the UNM-LA campus, 4000 University Dr. Any community member who plans to file a FAFSA is welcome.
The priority deadline for FAFSA 2017-2018 is Jan. 6 for all UNM campuses. Students meeting the priority deadline will receive first consideration for various federal and state grants, such as the Federal Pell Grant. Unlike a loan, a Pell Grant does not have to be repaid. A completed FAFSA is also required for many scholarship, work-study, and loan programs.
UNM-LA staff will be available to answer questions about the FAFSA and to walk students through the application process. Those planning to complete the FAFSA during the workshop must bring:
- Student and parent (if applicable) Social Security Numbers;
- Your Alien Registration Number if you are not a U.S. citizen;
- Student and parent 2015 federal tax returns, W-2 forms, and records of any untaxed income; and
- An FSA ID (if you have one).
Applicants may be able to transfer their federal tax return information into the FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.
Federal Student Aid, a part of the U.S. Department of Education, is the largest provider of student financial aid in the nation. The office of Federal Student Aid provides more than $150 billion in federal grants, loans, and work-study funds each year to more than 13 million students paying for college or career school.
UNM-LA is offering FAFSA workshop to anyone in the community who wishes to attend. For more information about the workshop, contact Student Services at 505.662.0332.
