Los Alamos Middle School Students Heading To National History Day Contest At University Of Maryland In June

Twenty-two students from Piñon Elementary School and Los Alamos Middle School took their National History Day projects to the New Mexico History Day contest last month in Albuquerque. LAPS News:

Twenty-two students from Piñon Elementary School and Los Alamos Middle School took their National History Day projects to the New Mexico History Day contest last month at Central New Mexico Community College in Albuquerque.

Evan Cunningham and Isaac Light won 2nd place in the Junior Group Documentary category with their documentary “Dive Bombers, Dictators, and Death” and will travel in June to the National Contest at the University of Maryland.

Brandon Keller won 3rd place in the Junior Paper category with his paper ­“The Elixir Sulfanilamide Tragedy: How One Medicine Changed Drug Safety Forever” and is an alternate for the national contest.

Three sixth graders also won special awards:

  • Everett James won the Environmental History Award for his Junior Individual Website, “The Reintroduction of Wolves into Yellowstone”
  • Aditya Nag won the J. Robert Oppenheimer Person in Science Award for his Junior Paper, “How Sir Isaac Newton’s Role in the European Scientific Revolution Revolutionized Science and the Way People Thought About It”
  • Grant Mason won the J. Robert Oppenheimer Excellence in Research Award for his Junior Individual Documentary, “The Lithuanian Book Smugglers: Their Fight for Literature”
