NMHM News:
SANTA FE — Walk into the Palace Press at the New Mexico History Museum, and you might see a vintage printing press in action as the curator prints posters on a Vandercook proof press. You might even have the chance to turn the handle and make your own print. A new exhibition at the Museum, “Printed at the Palace,” celebrates this unique letterpress print shop located inside the historic Palace of the Governors and showcases a selection of broadsides, flyers, and limited-edition prints and books created at the Press.
“The Palace Press has been an invaluable resource for printing history not only in preservation but also keeping letterpress traditions alive and active for over 50 years,” Palace Press Curator Keri Miki-Lani Schroeder said. “This exhibition showcases the impeccable craft and historical significance of the press.”
The Press at the Palace of the Governors, commonly called “The Palace Press,” is the oldest and longest-running letterpress operation of its kind in the state of New Mexico, established in the early 1970s. Thousands of broadsides and books printed there help the museum educate students and visitors on printing’s history and art.
“Printed at the Palace” will showcase works created on historic nineteenth and early-twentieth century equipment. The materials range from handbills and pamphlets to meticulously crafted, handbound books. Broadsides from renowned poets such as Arthur Sze, N. Scott Momaday, and Gary Snyder will be on display, as well as beautifully handcrafted books featuring iconic New Mexican artists Gustave Baumann and Peter Aschwanden.
“Printed at the Palace” is now open and will be on exhibit inside the Palace of the Governors at the New Mexico History Museum through Dec. 1, 2027. Visitors are invited to see the historic presses after viewing the exhibition. A public reception with light refreshments will be hosted by the Museum of New Mexico Foundation Women’s Board 1 – 3 p.m., Saturday, May 9, Curator Keri Schroeder will be sharing information and insights about the collection and exhibition.
