LAPS News:
The Los Alamos Public Schools Student Services department invites parents, families and school staff to join the Gifted Advisory Committee for two special presentations in April. The featured speaker will be Julie Skolnick M.A., J.D., an internationally recognized expert on gifted and twice-exceptional learners, who will be exploring the topic of “Gifted and Distractible.”
The dates for these presentations are from 4:30–5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 9, and Wednesday, April 29. Both will be accessible via Zoom.
Executive Functions: Why Gifted and 2e Learners Struggle and How Strength-Based Instruction Helps
Being gifted does not automatically mean being organized. Many gifted students think deeply and learn quickly, but may struggle with skills like planning, managing time, staying organized, starting tasks, or handling big emotions. Learn how executive functioning difficulties manifest in 2e learners, why gifted characteristics actually increase executive functioning struggles, and how a strength-based, compassionate approach can foster success.
This presentation will begin at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, April 9.

Gifted and Distractible: Parenting and Teaching Twice Exceptional Learners
Gain deeper insight into what drives the behaviors of twice-exceptional (2e) children and teens. This engaging session explores the “Cycle for Success”—understanding, strategies, and advocacy—to help parents, educators, and professionals create meaningful, lasting change. Participants will learn how to anticipate common challenges, respond with empathy and clarity, and implement practical tools that support both strengths and areas of need.
This presentation will begin at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 29.
