The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos was introduced to new Executive Director Ramon Garcia of the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization (LARSO) at the Dec. 16 meeting at Trinity on the Hill Church.

Originally from Mexico, Garcia attended high school and college in New Mexico, and was involved with the Pojoaque Boys and Girls Club.

Garcia expressed gratitude for the open and warm welcome he was given when he came to our community and admiration for the diligence, commitment and heart of LARSO’s employees and volunteers who give to and value the senior community. He said that he believes that serving seniors directly impacts a community’s health and well-being.

As the new director, Garcia said that he intends to build on and strengthen the organization’s programs and framework to fulfill the mission to promote positive living of seniors in Los Alamos County.

He said the focus will be on five components:

  • Positive mindset and resilience;
  • Physical and cognitive health;
  • Deepening social relations;
  • Promoting independence and environmental mastery; and
  • Strengthening systems of care.

Garcia said he is looking forward to the work ahead and concluded his presentation with the quote: “A vision without action is a nightmare”.
