SANTA FE — Due to a high likelihood of rain and storms we have rescheduled our Open House to Saturday, Oct. 18!
The Horse Shelter, now celebrating its 25th anniversary, is thrilled to welcome the community back to its annual Open House from 11 a.m.–3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, at our scenic 128-acre ranch in Cerrillos, just 30 minutes south of Santa Fe.
This free, family-friendly event offers a unique opportunity to learn about horse rescue and rehabilitation while enjoying a day on the ranch. With 102 horses currently in our care, you’ll meet some of New Mexico’s most resilient and beautiful animals—and the people who make their healing possible.
What to Expect:
- Ranch tours and opportunities to meet some of our rescue horses
- Informal riding and training demonstrations throughout the day
- Horse stories and adoption success spotlights
- Information about our adoption, volunteer, and sponsorship programs
- A fun photo op station and family-friendly activities
- Snacks, soft drinks and water available
This event is held outdoors on rugged terrain—please dress accordingly and bring sun protection. For the safety of our horses, no dogs are allowed.

About The Horse Shelter
The Horse Shelter is a 501(c)(3) public charity and is accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). We rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome horses that have been abandoned, neglected, or abused across New Mexico. With a dedicated staff, on-site trainer, active volunteer base, and generous supporters, we provide lifelong sanctuary to horses who cannot be adopted due to medical or behavioral needs. Together, we’re creating second chances—one horse at a time.
