Five boys and two girls ages 9 to 14 were named local champions of the 2019 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest.
Each participant was allowed 15 free throw attempts in the contest. Ties were settled by successive rounds of 5 free throws per contestant until a winner emerged.
Sacred Heart Council #3137 in Los Alamos sponsored the local competition Sunday, Jan. 27 at Los Alamos High School Griffith Gymnasium.
All youngsters ages 9 to 14 were eligible to participate. Michael Velasquez-Saiz and Akesa Gartz won the 9-year-old division while Maddox Martines was once again crowned the local champion but this year as an 11-year-old.
Grafton Urbatsch and Gerlynn “GG” Romero won the 12-year-old division while Abraham Sanchez (2018 12-year-old local, district and state champion) once again was crowned the local champion as a 13-year-old.
The final championship trophy was awarded to 14-year-old Jack Ammerman as he beat 2018 state champion Ryan Aldaz in three playoff rounds.
Each champion will now advance to compete in the district free throw championships, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 in LAHS Griffith Gym, with an eye toward moving on to the state championships March 16 at Bernalillo High School.
The Knights of Columbus Council #3137 recognizes runner-up contestants Evan Beveridge, 9, Edna Gartz, 9, Antonio Griffith, 11, and Ryan Aldaz, 14. The Knights of Columbus also thanks everyone who participated in this year’s local competition with special thanks to Los Alamos Public Schools for the use of Griffith Gymnasium.
