When asked what they took away from the experience, 2018 participants stated:
  • “I will know how to defend myself, know a healthy relationship, and about getting involved.”
  • “I feel more confident in myself.”
  • “Women are strong and important.”
  • “Women are confident.”

All of the participants surveyed after the event responded that they would recommend the Girls Discovery Workshop to a friend with one girl adding, “This was one of the most amazing experiences!”

A lively group discussion about resilience during the 2018 Leadership Los Alamos Youth Session sparked the inspiration for this event. “I am passionate about supporting young women,” shared LLA class member Naomi Maestas. “We face so many challenges today. We want to equip girls with the skills and inspiration to reach their potential.”

From this simple interchange, a commitment to organize a conference for girls was made. This is the second year the event is being offered and the all women steering committee includes local business owners, non-profit professionals, athletes, educators, youth mentors, and community members. This year’s event is sponsored by N3B, Del Norte Credit Union, Title Guaranty LLC, Los Alamos JJAB, LAPS, UNMLA, Los Alamos Coop Market, and Sam and Shay Kendricks.
