First responders from across the Southwest convened Nov. 18-20 for the 2016 Fire and Ice Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Conference at UNM-Los Alamos.

Speakers from across the region presented talks on various aspects of emergency and critical care to 75 first responders.

Among the many conference speakers, Dist. 43 Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard discussed wildlife protection legislation she is pushing in conjunction with Karen Williams of Los Alamos. Williams was attacked several months ago when she unknowingly ran between a mother bear and her cubs in the Valles Caldera. The mother bear was euthanized and Williams and Garcia Richard are working to change the law regarding bears protecting their young. Donna McHenry of the Los Alamos Fire Department spoke on “Mass Casualty Incident Command Made Simple” and Jenna White MD, addressed “OB Emergencies as well as High Altitude Sickness”. Robert Grothe presented a talk on “Active Shooter: An EMS Nightmare”, Classic Air Medical staff shared the latest information on Hands On Airway and SIMS Labs and LAFD’s Kelly Grace-Meyer talked about HAZMAT Awareness for First Responders

“The conference is a free educational opportunity provided by Classic Air Medical and Los Alamos Medical Center,” LAMC Marketing Director Mary Beth Maassen said. “Many of those attending the conference work as volunteer first responders in their home communities, so the occasion to learn state-of-the-art techniques from some of the best in the business was deeply appreciated.”

Paul Lisko, an EMT with the La Cueva Volunteer Fire Department and longtime coordinator of the Fire and Ice Conference has worked as the instructor-coordinator with Rural Programs at UNM-EMS since 1996. Last year he welcomed Classic Air Medical onboard and Jenevra Bertin, a flight nurse and preceptor for Classic Air Medical, and Barry Bertin, also a flight nurse with Classic Air Medical, stepped up to help coordinate the conference.

“The information shared in this conference is important because the more prepared the EMT’s in the field are, the more likely we are to see successful outcomes for our patients,” Bertin said. “Providing them with the most up-to-date, evidenced-base care protocols improves patient outcomes.”

Conference sponsors:

  • LAMC – committed to making the community healthier;
  • Classic Air Medical – based at LAMC, provides safe, efficient, reliable and expert quality aviation services, critical care transport, and community health education to the communities and customers that they serve; and
  • UNM-Los Alamos – committed to educational excellence provides the meeting space for the annual conference.

Last year 41 responders attended the conference, which grew to 75 this year. The organizers are hoping to double that number next year.
