Law Day 2026: The Rule Of Law And The Ongoing Pursuit Of The American Dream

Each year on May 1, Law Day invites us to reflect not only on the ideals of our legal system, but also on the work still left to do. This year’s theme, “The Rule of Law and the American Dream,” reminds us that the promise of freedom, opportunity, and equal justice has meaning only when the law is applied fairly and consistently to everyone.

Judge Catherine Taylor

We know that many people look at the world today and see reasons for concern—inequality, division, barriers to opportunity, and times when accountability can feel out of reach. Those concerns are real. Law Day is not about pretending our system is perfect. It is about recognizing that the rule of law gives us the framework to keep pushing toward something better. It is the principle that no person is above the law, that rights belong to all people, and that justice must be pursued even when it is difficult.

Courts play an important role in that effort. Every day, we strive to provide a place where disputes are resolved fairly, where people are heard with dignity, and where the law serves the public rather than power. While institutions must continue to earn public trust, transparency and community engagement are part of that responsibility.

We invite the public to join us from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., May 1, at the courthouse, 2500 Trinity Drive, for a courthouse tour and cupcakes. We welcome the opportunity to connect with our community, answer questions, and reflect together on how the rule of law can help build a more just future for everyone.
