PEEC News:

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) in partnership with the Northern New Mexico Regional Arts Center has announced a summer camp opportunity. Sponsored by Enterprise Bank & Trust, the “Española Valley Arts and Sciences Camp” will take place June 3-7, 2024.

“We know summer camps can keep kids mentally and physically active, develop social skills, and build a sense of community outside the classroom,” PEEC educator Beth Sanchez said.

Enterprise Bank & Trust President Liddie Martinez shows support stating, “Our kids in the Valley need something they can look forward to with confidence that allows them to express themselves and discover the magic of our culture and geographic footprint.”

The Arts and Science Camp will integrate field science and heritage arts, with the aim of building deeper connections and understanding with the help of local artists and other community members.

“We want to empower young people in our region, enabling them to develop skills, confidence, knowledge, and a strong connection to their environment. This, in turn, will support their success in the classroom, within their communities, and beyond.”

During this camp, kids will explore the region’s rich cultural history through art, discovery, and hands-on experiences. Activities will include introductions to various heritage arts, learning about geology, observing petroglyphs, and exploring the significance of water in the Valley by visiting acequias, rivers, streams, public lands, farms, and historic sites.

Key to this camp will be trips to the landscapes and communities around Española where they will practice field science as well as explore connections between acequias and local agricultural methods.  Campers will also work on art projects influenced by the places they visit.  Another aspect of the camp will be meeting community members who continue agricultural and artistic practices in northern New Mexico.
