Los Alamos County: Low-hanging Communication Line On Walnut Canyon Rim Trail Is Now Repaired

COUNTY News:

A low-hanging communication line on the Walnut Canyon Rim Trail, initially reported on March 31 via the Los Alamos Trails Facebook page, has been safely repaired as of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1.

The line, owned by Lumen Technologies, posed a hazard to hikers and bicyclists until its resolution.

The issue first came to light when the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) was alerted by posts from concerned citizens on social media. Staff reported the problem to the telecommunications company and assumed it would be quickly addressed. The County’s open space and trails specialist further closed this section of trail with orange cones and caution tape. However, the drooping line remained a danger and further reports were made on the Facebook group “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” on April 26.

Responding to the ongoing concern, DPU communicated with Lumen Technologies again. The open space and trails specialist also took measures to ensure public safety by marking the affected trail area with orange cones and caution tape since the previous cones and tape had been removed. On May 1—31 days later—Lumen reported that the necessary repairs were completed and the trail safe to use. Lumen representatives also asked that individuals report internet outages and infrastructure issues by calling their customer service line at 1-800-244-1111 so that they may generate a ticket.

The DPU extends its gratitude to the community members who reported the issue and encourages using the “Los Alamos NOW” app for future reports to the County. This app allows residents to enter issues directly into the DPU workflow system, ensuring they are tracked. Further, individuals who input the issue are notified when it is resolved. The “Los Alamos NOW” app is available to download for free in the Apple Store and the Google Play Store.

Alternatively, the public can also still notify DPU and the County of issues on public property by contacting the Customer Care Center at 505.662.8333 or CustomerCare@lacnm.us.

Moving forward, DPU has identified the need for a new policy to enhance public safety and accountability. Following the initial report to telecommunication companies about potential dangers with communication infrastructure, DPU will allow 48 hours for repairs. If the issue is not resolved within this timeframe, DPU crews will secure the area and charge the responsible companies for the cost of any actions taken. Additionally, if the issue impacts a trail’s safety, the open space and trails specialist will close the trail and issue a press release to notify the public.
