Public Works Projects:

DP Road Phase II Reconstruction Project to begin May 6

Los Alamos County Public Works Department is under contract with TLC Plumbing & Utility to start work on the DP Road Phase II Reconstruction project May 6. The project on DP Road will start near the Los Alamos Fire Department Training on the west end and continue to the east end of DP Road entering TA-21. The contractor has begun preliminary work such as utility locates, construction staking, staging area, and yard set up.
TLC Plumbing & Utility will work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday with weekends as needed.
To minimize disruption, TLC Plumbing & Utility crews will notify and coordinate with affected businesses and residents on certain construction logistics, utility upgrades, and traffic changes as work progresses.
Beginning May 6, traffic control work will start with a flagging operation to establish a work zone in the eastbound lane and adjacent parking lot south of DP Road to install multiple utilities.
Traffic will be detoured south of the existing parking from a location near the Los Alamos County Fire Station and ending near Franks Supply Company. Flaggers will be available for large vehicle delivery pickup and drop-off and access to TA-21.
Motorists will need to follow the detour signs. The detours will ensure ingress and egress to businesses. Business access points through the construction zone will be limited. However, parking and access will be available from the westbound lane of DP Road for ADA parking, private parking, and pedestrians.
Beginning May 6, parking in the existing lot south of DP Road will no longer be available.
Vehicles will need to be relocated to private parking or to the new temporary parking established by the project in the County parcel. The first temporary parking area will be accessible near the Los Alamos County Fire Station, the second will be accessible south of the ACE Hardware store.
Services such as mail delivery, trash and recycling collection, and emergency services will be maintained. Businesses can expect large equipment and construction noise. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to use caution around construction activities and avoid entering the work zone outside of designated detour paths.
Rose Street Reconstruction Project

Los Alamos County Public Works Department is under contract with TLC Plumbing & Utility on the Rose Street Reconstruction Project for Rose Street from Central Avenue to Peach Street, including sections of Peach Street and Spruce Street. The contractor will place the tie-ins of the 8-inch, 14-inch waterlines and gas line services next week. In coordination with the Department of Public Utilities. The contractor will continue to work on installing concrete sidewalks, curb and gutter, and storm drains.
To minimize disruption, crews will notify and coordinate with affected residents on certain construction logistics, utility upgrades, and traffic changes as work progresses. Motorists will need to follow the detour signs. The detours will ensure ingress and egress to residences. Residents can expect large equipment and construction noise.
Services such as mail delivery, trash and recycling collection, school bus, transit, and emergency services will be maintained.
Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to use caution around construction activities and avoid entering the work zone. Construction hours are planned from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Urban Trail Phase I and II Project

Hasse Contracting Company Inc., under contract with Los Alamos County Public Works to construct the Urban Trail Phase I & II Multi-use Trail Project, will have construction activities at the following locations downtown and along and off Canyon Road during the week of April 15.
Weather permitting, areas impacted include:
- Final grading and landscaping will continue during this week in the following areas. Periodic closures of the trail and sidewalks may be needed to accomplish this work. Pedestrian detours will be provided when this occurs.
- Area 1: Within the Fuller Lodge grounds adjacent to Central Ave. and heading north towards the Romero Cabin
- Area 2A: 20th St. from the Youth Activity Center driveway, north to the main access to 475 20th St.
- Area 2B: 20th St. from Trinity Drive to Ashley Pond Park parking lot driveway: The trail and sidewalk at the intersection of Trinity Drive and 20th Street will be closed to make repairs during this week. Pedestrian detours will be provided when this occurs.
- Work Zone Area 3: Within the wooded area by the Canyon Road Tennis Courts
- The tennis courts parking lot will be closed for the duration of the construction and utilized as a staging area by the contractor. The tennis court and wallboard are closed. Alternatives for tennis and wallboard can be found at Urban Park, Myrtle Tennis/Pickleball Courts, Piñon Park, and Barranca Mesa Park. Activities will include the construction of the piers for the precast boardwalk along the east and north sides of the work area and the excavation and construction of the trail alignment from Spruce Street.
- Work Zone Area 4: Within the Fuller Lodge grounds starting at the Romero Cabin and continuing north to Nectar Street – This section of the trail has been opened to pedestrians. Additional construction activities, including final grading and landscaping, will occur in this area, requiring periodic closures of the section of trail in the area adjacent to the Ancestral Pueblo site. Pedestrian detours will be provided when this occurs.
- Work Zone Area 5: Peach and Ponderosa streets – The section of Peach Street between Nectar and Ponderosa streets will remain closed with traffic detoured to 19th St. The section of trail along Peach and Ponderosa has been opened to pedestrians. Some additional construction activities will occur in this area that will require periodic closures of the trail section. Pedestrian detours will be provided when this occurs.
- Work Zone Area 6: Canyon Road, Tennis Courts to Aquatic Center – The contractor will continue construction of the trail along the north side of Canyon Road between the Tennis Courts and the PEEC Driveway. The Shoulder along the north side of the Canyon in this area is closed. Two lanes of traffic will generally be maintained with flagger operations used when a lane is needed for construction vehicles to have access to the work area. Vehicles and bicyclists are asked to “share the road” where these shoulder closures are occurring.
Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to use caution around construction activities and avoid entering the work zones. Construction hours are planned from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Weekend work may be necessary if construction activities during the week are impacted by weather.

Loma Linda Road Improvements Project

Albuquerque Asphalt, Inc. will continue working on all Loma Linda neighborhood streets. Asphalt paving will commence this week. The project is scheduled for completion at the end of May.
Ingress and egress to residents’ homes and the Loma Linda neighborhood will be maintained. The county is requesting that residents park their vehicles in their driveways to allow the contractor room to work in the area. Services such as mail delivery, trash and recycling collection, school bus, and emergency services will be maintained and coordinated.
Work zone traffic control will be in place, so please proceed with caution regarding the large equipment. Motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are advised to use caution around construction activities and avoid entering the work zone. Construction hours are planned 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Quemazon Place Road Repair Scheduled

After water from a leaking gate valve and subsequent repair efforts destroyed a roadway in the Quemazon subdivision on Wednesday, Los Alamos County Department of Public Utilities (DPU) and the Los Alamos County Traffic and Streets Division collaborated on a plan to fix the road as quickly as possible. Repairs are scheduled for April 26, April 29 and April 30.
The work zone on Quemazon Place between Tranquilo and Sereno will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the repair. Traffic can be detoured through Tranquilo and Sereno.
Drivers are asked to exercise caution near the work zone.

Asphalt Patching in White Rock Begins April 29
Weather permitting, crews will be patching asphalt at 36 Grand Canyon Drive, 338 Kimberly and 566 Brighton Street. A flagging operation will be in place as needed. Work will continue until completed. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.
Countywide Roadway Striping Continues
Signs and Markings crews will continue to strip roadways countywide until the project is completed. Pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle traffic are urged to slow down, avoid the painting equipment and crew, and avoid driving on the wet paint.
Road Closure on Quemazon Place between Tranquilo and Sereno Continues
A water line break occurred Wednesday, April 24 on Quemazon Place. Utility crews removed large sections of roadway to make the required repairs.
The time required for Utility crews to complete repairs determines the timeline for Traffic and Streets crews to make repairs to the roadway. Crews are anticipated to begin roadway repairs starting Monday, April 29 and will continue until completion.
The work zone, which runs along Quemazon Place between Tranquilo and Sereno, is closed to through traffic for the duration of the repair and cleanup. Traffic can be detoured through Tranquilo and Sereno Drivers are asked to exercise caution near the work zone.
Non-County Projects:
The following construction projects are not funded by Los Alamos County. Updates are included to keep residents informed of potential traffic impacts. Questions should be directed to the parties identified within each description. Please obey all traffic devices and slowdown in work zones.
Concrete Work on 35th St. off Trinity Drive Begins
In association with Pavilion Construction, Cornerstone Contractors will begin installing sidewalks, curb and gutter, and other concrete work along 35th St. off Trinity Drive. This is part of the scope of work associated with the Hills Apartment Complex. Construction will begin Tuesday, April 30 and continue through May 24, 2024. Work will begin daily at 7 a.m. and finish by 5 p.m.
