Youth Shakespeare Festival Santa Fe Dec. 3

ISC News:

The International Shakespeare Center announces its first annual youth shakespeare festival:
  • When: 1-5 p.m., Dec. 3
  • Where: Scottish Rite Temple at 463 Paseo de Peralta in Santa Fe
The ISC spent the summer working with educators and professional Shakespeareans to create a program to celebrate Shakespeare with high school students and give them access to these life-transforming works. A special guest, Devon Glover, The Sonnet Man, will lead a sonnet workshop with students and also will perform at the Festival.

Since late August, participating students from New Mexico School for the Arts, Santa Fe Indian School, Academy for Technology and the Classics, Santa Fe High School, and Upstart Crows of Santa Fe have been rehearsing their scenes and monologues in preparation for the event. In the process they have developed skills in critical thinking, close reading, literary analysis, public speaking, voice, stage combat, and Shakespearean staging.

Educators have expressed their appreciation for the curriculum developed by the isc that features not only local directors with more than two decades of experience teaching Shakespeare to young people, but also includes professional actors, directors, and scholars. Guest artists include Ariana Karp (Ducdame Ensemble); Breshaun Joyner, M.A. and doctoral candidate; Dr. Robin Williams; and Devon Glover.

The ISC is excited about the potential for this program and anticipate that in the years to come the festival will grow to include more schools in both Santa Fe and around the state and become an annual event of note.
