Area young people ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies Saturday, June 14 as Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 691 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at the Los Alamos Municipal Airport.
The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to share EAA members’ passion for aviation.
“Free airplane rides are just part of the Flight Rally,” said EAA spokesperson Amy Ross said. “We hope to build one-to-one relationships between pilots and young people, giving a new generation a chance to learn more about the possibilities that exist in the world of aviation. Pilots will introduce the attendees to aviation by describing the fundamental aspects of airplane design, how specific components are used during flight, and basic aerodynamics among other topics. Additionally, the attendees will have the unique opportunity to meet and fly with the many local pilots who build and restore airplanes.”
Following the flight, each young person, will receive a certificate making them an official Young Eagle. Their name will then be entered into the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wis. The Logbook is also accessible on the Internet at www.youngeagles.org.
In addition to the certificate, the new Young Eagle will be given a logbook with an access code for a complete free online Flight Training course offered by Sporty’s.
Young people who have already participated in a Young Eagle Flight Rally are encouraged to attend. Additional flight time will be added to their original logbook, if available, or recorded in a new logbook.
Those attending the flight rally are asked come to the Los Alamos Airport Terminal Building, starting at 8:30 a.m. to register for their flight. Flights will begin at approximately 8:40 a.m., with registration closing at 11:30 a.m. Flights are dependent upon weather and pilot availability and will last approximately 15-20 minutes. All youths must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to grant permission in order to complete registration.

Along with flight rallies, EAA members also fly Young Eagles on an individual basis. Each pilot volunteers their time and aircraft so the flights can be provided free of charge for interested young people.
