The Los Alamos Family YMCA announced Friday to members that “we will be opening the “Y Express” in late January. This is a 3,600-square-foot facility located close to our main Y, in the Central Park Square building. We will be converting spaces 140 and 143, where Shear Genius and the Democratic Party are currently housed, which is east of the former KRSN space.“
The Y Express is needed, due to current overcrowded classes, such as Zumba and Power Up. Some folks are turned away in some classes.
The email letter to members from CEO Linda Daly and Board President Matt Schmidt indicated that classes are currently in less-than-ideal conditions due to lack of space. The YMCA also is challenged to offer more classes, again due to lack of space.
“Last winter, we experienced crowded weight room conditions, particularly at lunch time and after work. We are poised for a tremendous opportunity for substantial membership and program growth when the new Municipal Building opens a block away from our Y,” Daly said.
The Y Express is a scaled-down version of the Y, offering space primarily for functional training and group exercise. Wellness staff has researched and proposed equipment that is “next-generation” and “revolutionary.”
In the functional training area, one can complete a total body workout in 40 minutes or less. The group exercise area is larger than the current aerobic room and will offer a TRX Suspension Training System, an exercise experience that compliments the current offering.
More news about the Y Express, including a grand opening announcement and improvements and new equipment purchases planned in 2013 for the main facility will be released in future announcements in the Los Alamos Daily Post.
“We deeply appreciate your support and your membership. It is that support that enables us to bring people together to nurture the potential of youth, to foster healthy living and to support our neighbors,” Daly and Schmidt said.
