Women Dies In Police Shooting In Carlsbad

CARLSBAD The New Mexico State Police Investigation Bureau was contacted May 19 to investigate a police shooting involving the Carlsbad Police Department (CPD).
 
At about 3:53 p.m., May 19, 2019, CPD officers responded to 311 Peachtree Street in Carlsbad for a welfare check on a female. When officers arrived at the residence, they encountered Lori Markham, 47, of Carlsbad.
 
When officers encountered Markham, Markham yelled at officers while holding a black semi-automatic handgun. Officers retreated for their safety and waited for Carlsbad Police Department SWAT Team to arrive.
 
CPD SWAT arrived at the residence and began negotiations with Markham. During the negotiations Markham walked in and out of the residence armed with the handgun. At some point during negotiations, Markham exited the residence and pointed the handgun at officers. At that time, CPD Cpl. James Logsdon, Det. Patrick Bryant and Ofc. Jacob Castaneda discharged their department issued weapons. Markham was struck by the officers’ gunfire.
 
CPD SWAT paramedics rendered aid to Markham. Markham was transported by ambulance to the Carlsbad Medical Center Hospital. She was pronounced deceased at the hospital by the Office of the Medical Investigator.
 
Cpl. Logsdon has been employed with CPD for five and half years. Det. Byrant has been employed with CPD for five and half years. Ofc. Castaneda has been employed with CPD for three years. All three officers were members of the CPD SWAT Team. No further information is available at this time.
